Morning Prayer  (The Book of Alternative Services)

I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord, whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25,26

Lord, open our lips,

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us.  O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Amen. Alleluia!

The Invitatory

The Lord is our light and life: O come, let us worship.

The Venite (BAS Page 49)

Come, let us sing to the Lord;

Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his for he made it, and his hands have moulded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our maker.

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

Psalm 116

  1. Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the 1 I love the Lord, because he has heard the voice of my supplication, * because he has inclined his ear to me whenever I called upon him.
  2. The cords of death entangled me; the grip of the grave took hold of me; * I came to grief and sorrow.
  3. Then I called upon the name of the Lord: * “O Lord, I pray you, save my life.”
  4. Gracious is the Lord and righteous; * our God is full of compassion.
  5. The Lord watches over the innocent; * I was brought very low, and he helped me.
  6. Turn again to your rest, O my soul, * for the Lord has treated you well.
  7. For you have rescued my life from death, * my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling.
  8. I will walk in the presence of the Lord * in the land of the living.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever.  Amen

The Proclamation of the Word

A reading from Wisdom 3:1-9

But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them.2 In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster,3 and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace.4 For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.5 Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;6 like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt-offering he accepted them.7 In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble.8 They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them for ever. 9 Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.*

A reading from 1 Peter 1:3 – 9

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice,* even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 7so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Although you have not seen* him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

The Gospel is Proclaimed

The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

People: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

John 6:37 – 40

‘Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.’

The Gospel of Christ

People:        Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

The Confession of Faith

Hear O’ Israel

Hear, O Israel,

the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Love the Lord your God  with all your heart,

with all your soul,

with all your mind,  and with all your strength.

This is the first and the great commandment.

The second is like it:

Love your neighbour as yourself.

There is no commandment greater than these.

A Prayer of Remembrance

We remember people we have loved but see no longer this Remembrance Sunday: those who died this past year, loved ones for whom we still grieve, and men, women, and children killed in times of war.

The names of people who died this past year as recorded in our Burial Register will be read.  You will then be invited to name anyone you would like to remember today.

I invite you to name those you would like to remember.

We pray for the men, women, and children killed in times of war.

Leader:We pray,  Almighty God, you have knit your chosen people together in one communion, in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Give to your whole Church in heaven and on earth your light and your peace.
People Hear us, Lord.
Leader May all who have been baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection die to sin and rise to newness of life, and may we with him pass through the grave and gate of death to our joyful resurrection.
People Hear us, Lord.
Leader Grant to us who are still in our pilgrimage, and who walk as yet by faith, that your Holy Spirit may lead us in holiness and righteousness all our days.
People Hear us, Lord.
Leader Grant to your faithful people pardon and peace, that we may be cleansed from all our sins and serve you with a quiet mind.
People Hear us, Lord.
Leader Grant to all who mourn a sure confidence in your loving care, that casting all their sorrow on you, they may know the consolation of your love.
People Hear us, Lord.
Leader Grant us grace to entrust those we remember today to your never-failing love which sustained them in this life. Hold them in the arms of your mercy and remember them according to the favour you bear your people.
People Hear us, Lord.

The Collect of the Day

Father of all, we pray to you for those we love but see no longer. Grant them your peace, let light perpetual shine upon them, and in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work I them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
