Morning Prayer  (The Book of Alternative Services)

Look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.  Luke 21.28

Lord, open our lips,

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

O God, make speed to save us.  O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Amen. Alleluia!

The Invitatory

The Kingdom of God is at hand: O come, let us worship.

The Venite (BAS Page 49)

Come, let us sing to the Lord;

Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, and a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his for he made it, and his hands have moulded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our maker.

For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

Psalm 122

1 I was glad when they said to me, * ”Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

2 Now our feet are standing * within your gates, O Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem is built as a city * that is at unity with itself.

4 To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, * the assembly of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord.

5 For there are the thrones of judgement, * the thrones of the house of David.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: * ”May they prosper who love you.

7 Peace be within your walls * and quietness within your towers.

8 For my brethren and companions’ sake, * I pray for your prosperity.

9 Because of the house of the Lord our God, * I will seek to do you good.”

Lord Jesus, give us the peace of the new Jerusalem. Bring all nations into your kingdom to share your gifts, that they may render thanks to you without end and may come to your eternal city, where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.

The Proclamation of the Word

A reading from Isaiah 2:1-5

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it.3   Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

People: Thanks be to God

A reading from Romans 13:11-14

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

The Gospel is Proclaimed

The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew

People: Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Matthew 24:35-44

‘But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son,* but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day* your Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

The Gospel of Christ

People:       Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

The Confession of Faith

Hear O’ Israel

Hear, O Israel,  the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God  with all your heart,

with all your soul,  with all your mind,  and with all your strength.

This is the first and the great commandment.

The second is like it:

Love your neighbour as yourself.

There is no commandment greater than these.

The Prayers of the People

(In joyful expectation let us pray to our Saviour and Redeemer, saying, “Lord Jesus, come soon!”)

O Wisdom, from the mouth of the Most High, you reign over all things to the ends of the earth: come and teach us how to live.

Lord Jesus, come soon!

O Lord, and head of the house of Israel, you appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush and you gave the law on Sinai: come with outstretched arm and ransom us.

Lord Jesus, come soon!

O Branch of Jesse, standing as a sign among the nations, all kings will keep silence before you and all peoples will summon you to their aid: come, set us free and delay no more.

Lord Jesus, come soon!

O Key of David and sceptre of the house of Israel, you open and none can shut; you shut and none can open: come and free the captives from prison. Lord Jesus, come soon!

O Morning Star, splendour of the light eternal and bright Sun of righteousness: come and enlighten all who dwell in darkness and in the shadow of death. Lord Jesus, come soon!

O King of the nations, you alone can fulfil their desires: Cornerstone, you make opposing nations one: come and save the creature you fashioned from clay. Lord Jesus, come soon!

O Emmanuel, hope of the nations and their Saviour: come and save us, Lord our God. Lord Jesus, come soon!

Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God,

give us grace to cast away the works of darkness

and put on the armour of light,

now in the time of this mortal life

in which your Son Jesus Christ

came to us in great humility,

that on the last day,

when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

to judge both the living and the dead,

we may rise to the life immortal;

through him who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.  For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
